Split Green Peas

Split green peas are an excellent source of protein, dietary fiber and are a good source of iron. It’s common to see split pea soup, but they are also delicious in casseroles, warm or cold in salads, or as a standalone side dish. “Mushy peas” are a staple in British and Irish fare alongside classic fish and chips or roast leg of lamb.

Cooking Instructions

Because these green peas have been split, they do not need to be soaked and will cook faster than whole dried peas.

For a simple and nutritious side dish: Sort and rinse 1 cup split peas while 3 cups water/stock comes to a boil. Add peas and, if desired, aromatics such as onion, garlic, bay leaf, bacon, ham/bones, Indian-inspired spices, etc. Return to a boil, reduce heat, and simmer for 30-40 min. Taste occasionally to test for desired doneness.

As an ingredient, use in recipes according to the recipe instructions.

Storage

Cooked split peas can be stored in the refrigerator for one week or frozen up to 6 months. Store uncooked split peas in a cool, dry place for up to 24 months.
